The Science is Settled: Conservatives Have More Self-Control Than Liberals

Well, this has always been true, now we have the science to back it up. And you’re not allowed to question science, deniers!

Are conservatives more likely to stick to a diet than liberals? The answer might be yes.

In a paper published Monday in Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, researchers say there is a link between political ideology and the ability to exert self-control.

In a series of three studies with more than 300 participants, the authors found that people who identify as conservative perform better on tests of self-control than those who identify as liberal regardless of race, socioeconomic status and gender.

They also report that participants’ performance on the tests was influenced by how much they believed in the idea of free will, which the researchers define as the belief that a person is largely responsible for his or her own outcomes.

For example, conservatives who are more likely to embrace the idea of free will overwhelmingly agreed with statements like “Strength of mind can always overcome the body’s desires” and “People can overcome any obstacles if they truly want to.”

Conservatives are also faster to comprehend basic words.

“If you see the word ‘red’ in blue type your mind wants to say ‘blue’ right away, but you have to suppress that,” Clarkson said. “That’s why it is a strong indicator of self regulation.”

The authors found that while both liberals and conservatives were able to accurately read the words, conservatives generally were able to do it faster than liberals.

Maybe we should ban liberalism to save liberals from themselves. It’s for their own good. Meanwhile, liberals also hate freedom.

“You tell liberals that belief in free will is bad and they are like, ‘Good, I don’t have it anyway,’ ” he said.

The researchers ran a similar test with a different fake article that argued belief in free will is useful for self-control and can lead to better and increased effort. After reading that article, conservatives outperformed liberals once again on the test.

This likely explains why liberals constantly fall for fake stories. Basically they’re stupid. It’s science, and it’s settled.

Recall how liberals love to say we need a “dialog” on various issues, when what they really mean is they want to call you names and if you protest, say that you are proving their point?

My own family experience is similar: my SIL complains that we cannot “discuss” politics, race, etc., to which I respond that this is true and is due to the fact that the first time I say something she disagrees with, she becomes angry and begins shouting insults.

This college-educated woman simply cannot control herself long enough to have a discussion, yet blames me for the fact that her response to disagreement is anger. I once asked her what happened when her professors said things she disagreed with – did she yell at them? She responded that they never said anything she disagreed with! Some education you got there!

If control does not originate from within the individual citizen (ie: morality and compliance with God’s law), then control will necessarily come from outside the individual (ie: some form of oppressive government). Our Founders agreed with this idea:

“Our Constitution was made only for a moral and religious people. It is wholly inadequate to the government of any other.”
-John Adams, October 11, 1798 in a letter to the officers of 1st Brigade of the 3rd Division of the Massachusetts Militia (link to entire letter)

Liberalism is largely about “liberation” from the existing moral order and indulging one’s desires without any constraints, thus the hatred of Christianity by many liberals–they don’t want anyone telling them their actions are wrong. Ten Commandments in a lobby? … get that outta here they say.

Kilo6 you sound like you are ready to accept sharia law.

The Treaty of Tripoli (Treaty of Peace and Friendship between the United States of America and the Bey and Subjects of Tripoli of Barbary) was the first treaty concluded between the United States and Tripolitania, signed at Tripoli on November 4, 1796, and at Algiers (for a third-party witness) on January 3, 1797. It was submitted to the Senate by President John Adams, receiving ratification unanimously from the U.S. Senate on June 7, 1797, and signed by Adams, taking effect as the law of the land on June 10, 1797.

The treaty was a routine diplomatic agreement and was later replaced. It has attracted attention in recent decades only because of a clause stating that “the Government of the United States of America is not, in any sense, founded on the Christian religion.”

As for that whole issue of “self control” loosen up a little in the immortal words of Ferris Bueller “Life moves pretty fast. If you don’t stop and
