Can this guy be any more out of touch? Look, we understand his vacation and golf comes first, but in mentioning the anniversary of “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell,” perhaps an acknowledgment of this woman killed in Afghanistan might be in order?
President Obama on Tuesday marked the five-year anniversary of the repeal of “Don’t ask, don’t tell,” touting “the power to change” and pledging to continue working “to move our country even closer to our founding ideals.”
The controversial policy, which took effect in 1994, barred openly gay people from serving in the military.
Obama vowed to repeal the rule as he campaigned in the 2008 presidential election. He signed the Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell Repeal Act on Dec. 22, 2010, after a protracted Congressional fight.
“Since the repeal of DADT, I’ve received hundreds of letters from service members who can now serve their country openly,” Obama wrote in a Facebook post Tuesday.
“Their stories are a powerful reminder of how much has changed over the past five years,” he added.
How’s this for a powerful reminder, King Putt?
A female officer in the Air Force who was one of the first openly gay service members to marry was identified on Tuesday as among the six US troops killed by a suicide bomber near Bagram air base in Afghanistan.
Facebook postings on Tuesday by friends and family of Air Force Major Adrianna Vorderbruggen mourned her death on Monday and sent condolences to her wife Heather and son Jacob, who live near Washington, D.C.
“We do find comfort in knowing that Heather and Jacob are no longer in the shadows and will be extended the rights and protections due any American military family as they move through this incredibly difficult period in their lives,” said the posting from Military Partners and Families Coalition.
Six American troops, including Vorderbruggen, were killed Monday when a suicide bomber on a motorbike struck their patrol in the deadliest attack on US forces this year.
Bagram, around 25 miles north of Kabul, is one of the main bases for the 9,800 US troops left in Afghanistan after international troops ended combat operations last year.
The victims included New York City Detective Joseph Lemm, a 15-year veteran of the NYPD who also volunteered in the US Air National Guard and was on his third deployment to war zones.
This is the guy who sends delegations to funerals of gangbangers, yet he doesn’t take time to mention murdered military. Shameful. But hey, watch Obama sink a chip!
