Boehner Invites Netanyahu to Speak Before Congress, White House Has Hissyfit

After his night of trashtalking to Republicans, Team Obama seems to have forgotten there are other branches of the government that are not beholden to him.

House speaker John Boehner pointedly sidestepped the White House on Wednesday, inviting Israeli prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu to speak before Congress on Iran next month and angering the Obama administration in the process.

Hours after President Obama warned Congress against passing sanctions on the Islamic theocracy over its nuclear program, Boehner revealed he had invited Netanyahu to Washington on February 11. The prime minister would address “the grave threats radical Islam and Iran pose to our security and way of life.”

Obama has has six years to do this but apparently has more pressing business.

The White House disagreed. ”The protocol would suggest that the leader of one country would contact the leader of another country when he’s traveling there,” press secretary Josh Earnest told reporters on an Air Force One flight to Idaho. “This particular event seems to be a departure from that protocol.”

Well, most of the media will ignore this and Obama will probably just schedule an “important” speech to pre-empt Netanyahu’s speech.

Protocol would also dictate that the WH not personally insult the PM of an ally.

I recall the WH had no problems calling PM Netanyahu a “liar” “coward” and “chickenshit”.

Short answer to the WH Press Sec’y: Protocol works only if mutually adhered to. Oh, and check with the State Dept. It might have known and approved of the visit, which if true means the WH was once again out of the loop.
