Hmm. We wonder if the Twitter trendoids will get a hashtag going for this woman? Probably not since it’s preferable to direct mindless rage toward your perceived political enemies than it is to primordial 8th Century savages.
A 25-year-old woman was stoned to death by her own family in front of a Pakistani high court on Tuesday for marrying the man she loved, police and a defence lawyer said.
Nearly 20 members of the woman’s family, including her father and brothers, ambushed her and her husband out front of the high court of Lahore, attacking her with batons and bricks in broad daylight before a crowd of onlookers, said police official Naseem Butt.
Farzana Parveen had married Mohammad Iqbal, with whom she had been engaged for years in opposition to her family, police said. The couple had come to the court to contest an abduction case, which the father had filed against his daughter’s husband, the woman’s lawyer Mustafa Kharal said.
Kharal said Parveen’s relatives waited outside the court, which is located on a main downtown thoroughfare. As the couple walked up to the court’s main gate, the family members fired shots in the air and tried to snatch her from Iqbal, he said.
When she resisted, her father, brothers and other relatives started beating her, eventually pelting her with bricks from a nearby construction site, Iqbal said.
All the suspects except her father escaped. He admitted killing his daughter, senior police officer Umer Cheema said, and explained it was a matter of honour. Many Pakistani families think a woman marrying her own choice of man brings dishonour on the family.
Parveen was three months pregnant, so it’s unlikely a terminated fetus will raise the ire of the left.
