Top House Dem: Of Course We’re Running on Impeachment, We Have Nothing Else

Posted by on Jul 30, 2014 at 2:41 pm

A strategy that just reeks of failure and desperation. They’re the only ones talking about impeachment, they have nothing but a legacy of failure to defend and hey, they’re raising money by the barrel fulls from their low-info supporters, so why not?

Congressional Democrats say they’re the gifts that keep on giving.

Rep. Steve Israel, the chairman of the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee, said Wednesday that conservative calls to impeach President Barack Obama and the House GOP’s push to sue the President are motivating the Democratic base in advance of November’s midterm elections.

Can they name one elected Republican currently calling for impeachment? No, they can’t.

“You bet we’re going to run on a Congress that is just obsessed with lawsuits, suing the President, talking about impeaching him, instead of solutions for the middle class, talking about jobs and infrastructure. You bet that we’re going to ask people to support us based on that contrast,” Israel declared at a briefing of CNN political reporters and producers.

Saying that Republicans have “stepped into a mess on this,” the seven-term congressman from New York added that “any time voters see contrasts between our priorities and their (the GOP’s) priorities, it is beneficial to us. No question about that….we win on contrast.”

We’ll see about that.

Republicans are framing the midterms as a referendum on the President and his policies, such as Obamacare.

“I think atmospherics are really bad for the Democrats,” Rep. Greg Walden, the chairman of the National Republican Congressional Committee, told Roll Call earlier this week. “This is shaping up far more to be a referendum election and not a good one for Democrats.”

Hence the desperation. It’ll only become more pronounced as they edge closer to the November bloodbath.

Speaking of which, here comes the 847th email from them this past week:

I’m just… disgusted.

In a few moments, Barack Obama will become the first President — ever — to be sued by Congress.

Boehner is clearly trying to get his chance to drag the President’s good name through the mud.

I’m tired of it. I’m fed up. And I’m ready to fight back.

Jammie, I know you haven’t had a chance to answer President Obama’s call-to-action yet. But there has NEVER been a more critical time than right now to support the President.

I’m pleading. Please chip in anything you can now.

Right now the Dems are capitalizing off the American people’s ignorance of the impeachment process and conventional wisdom that the politics of impeachment favor them. The best way to educate the people and debunk conventional wisdom is to have an impeachment hearing, not of the President, but of one of his political appointees, AG Holder. Most of the case for impeaching Holder is already been made by the House (he’s already been held in contempt), and the catalyst for bringing articles of impeachment can be his refusal to appoint a special prosecutor to investigate the IRS scandal.

The politics for impeaching Holder over the IRS is much better for the GOP (Holder isn’t nearly as sympathetic as Obama, and the IRS is about as popular as syphilis), the media would have to cover it, and the people would get to see the process up close.

“It’s almost as if they’re manufacturing another phony issue…”

    Textbook Stray Voltage:

“Controversy sparks attention, attention provokes conversation, and conversation embeds previously unknown or marginalized ideas in the public consciousness. This happens, Plouffe theorizes, even when—and sometimes especially when—the White House appears defensive, besieged, or off-guard.”
