Bipartisan Uproar Over ObamaCare’s Insane Menu Rules

Here you thought ObamaCare only involved skyrocketing premiums and loss of your choice of doctors. Now it’s also going to cost businesses through a set of Orwellian menu requirements at stores and restaurants.

A bipartisan group of lawmakers is asking the Obama administration to scale back draft regulations under ObamaCare that would force restaurants to post nutritional information on their menus.

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is close to finalizing a rule requiring calorie labels on vending machines and at restaurants and “similar retail food establishments.” Proposed in 2011, the regulations stem from the Affordable Care Act and are designed to combat obesity by helping consumers make healthier choices.

But the group of 24 lawmakers said the draft regulations, which apply to restaurants with 20 or more locations, go beyond Congress’ intent and would create painful new expenses for certain businesses, including delivery joints and eateries that specialize in made-to-order dishes

“Specifically, the proposed rule limits the ability of businesses to determine for themselves how best to provide nutritional information to customers,” the lawmakers wrote in a letter to FDA Commissioner Margaret Hamburg. “As a result, the proposal harms both those non-restaurants that were not intended to be captured by the menu labeling law as well as those restaurants that have flexibility and variability in the foods they offer.”

The lawmakers pressed the FDA to limit the scope of the regulations, which they say would harm small businesses that are already complying separately with the 1990 Nutrition Labeling and Education Act.

Pizza places and grocery stores in particular have complained about the draft standards, saying they would be all but impossible to maintain. For instance, there are 34 million different combinations of pizza toppings, according to an industry trade group. It’s impractical to require that they list calorie counts for all of the options, they say.

At the same time, they probably could come up with calorie counts for 34 million different kinds of pizza before ever functions properly.

    Ask yourself this:

If Obama was actively trying to destroy this country, what would he be doing differently?

    Nothing, you say? Yeah …

This is about ruining the economy, because as jukin says above, the “right” people are in charge, so surely communism/socialism will work THIS time, right?

Here’s a novel idea: People who want nutrition information on their menus can frequent establishments that provide it and not frequent those that don’t. The market can speak for itself and the government need not be involved at all.

Then restaurant companies will create corporate holding groups and segment their restaurants into sub categories to avoid compliance, for example local chain’s name/ownership will become local chain southside, local chain eastside, etc.

It’s come to this for “Progressives”, eh?

If George Washington, Thomas Jefferson et al ever get a respite from rolling in their graves, imagine them contemplating the spectacle of Americans voting twice to turn their hard won bastion against tyranny and oppression into a hideously metasticizing behemoth which now seeks to establish a massive new bureacratic infrastructure to vigilantly police the type font of the drive-through menus at Jack in theBox.

Went in to an Au Bon Pain 1 1/2 years ago and they had pre-complied with the calorie posting requirements. The caloric content was on the backboard menu and it was HUGE – bigger than the item information. I figured they were trying to suck up to Moochele in a big way.

After loudly expressing my displeasure about how ridiculous their establishment looked and why we needed to be treated like children, I left the establishment and have never been back although I used to frequent the place on a very regular basis.

How about a law requiring Moochele to post the number of calories it took to acquire her fat ass? That’s a regulation I could get behind.

I wonder why they’re just figuring all this out now, when we racist greedy teabaggers figured it all out in 2010.

“We have to pass the bill to see what’s in it.”
Yeah, so how’s that working out?

Vending Machines too? So I can be informed and make healthier choices?

If I go to a vending machine at all, it’s because I have a Snickers jones. I don’t give a shit at all how much fat, sugar, calories or rat turds are in it. I want a fucking Snickers. Period.

And now I get the privilege of paying more for it because of nifty new labeling requirements.

The quality of the citizenry between their time and now has obviously taken a rather precipitous plunge…
