For the first time, Ebola ranks among the top-10 issues Americans see as key issues for the country, according to a Gallup poll that puts the deadly virus behind topics like the economy, immigration and health care but tied with issues like education and the rise of the Islamic State in Iraq and Syria.

The poll reflects growing concern among Americans after a Liberian national brought the virus to Texas in September and died Oct. 8 in a Dallas hospital. Two nurses who treated him contracted the virus and are getting specialized care at facilities in Atlanta and Bethesda, Md.

“The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s new regulations for handling Ebola-stricken patients may or may not alleviate Americans’ fears,” Gallup said. “But if new infections continue to arise in the U.S., it is likely the virus will stay on the list as a top problem.”
