We’re not quite sure what’s dumber, the outfit or his ignorance thinking nobody would be offended. Maybe they would be if he served up some watermelon and fried chicken for added effect.
Assemblyman Dov Hikind donned a blackface costume yesterday at his blowout Purim party and defended the outrageous getup as a harmless “basketball” look.
The joyous Jewish celebration of Purim can often involve Halloween-type costumes and Hikind didn’t spare any detail in his curious retro look.
He wore brown face paint, sunglasses, an Afro wig and an orange jersey.
“I was just, I think, I was trying to emulate, you know, maybe some of these basketball players. Someone gave me a uniform, someone gave me the hair of the actual, you know, sort of a black basketball player,” Hikind told the political news Web site Politicker.
“It was just a lot of fun. Everybody just had a very, very good time and every year I do something else. … The fun for me is when people come in and don’t recognize me.”
Often considered the go-to guy for Brooklyn’s Jewish community, Hikind said he can’t fathom how blackface — or at least his version of it — could be considered insensitive or in poor taste.
“I can’t imagine anyone getting offended,” said Hikind, 62.
We imagine he’ll be incredulous when the schvarztes complain.
“Purim, you know, everything goes and it’s all done with respect. No one is laughing, no one is mocking. No one walked in today and said, ‘Oh my God,’ “ the powerful Brooklyn Democrat said.
“It’s all just in good fun with respect always, whatever anyone does it’s done with tremendous amounts of respect and with dignity, of course.”
If this guy had an (R) after his name he’d have already been forced from office. Curiously this report makes no mention of his political affiliation, nor does the Puffington Host. CBS2 in New York has no idea he’s a Democrat, nor does the NBC affiliate. Imagine that.
Update: The fallout begins, yet still no mention of Hikind’s party affiliation.
