Remember when Mitt Romney mentioned this during the presidential campaign? Why, that was the most rotten, dishonest ad in the history of rotten dishonest ads! In fact, it was the Politifact Lie of the Year.

Yeah, about that…

Fiat, Chrysler and Guangzhou Automobile Group are getting close to reaching an agreement to produce Jeeps in China for the Chinese market, an Italian newspaper reported Sunday.

Il Corriere della Sera said Fiat and Chrysler CEO Sergio Marchionne could announce the agreement at the 2013 North American International Auto Show today.

Gulberto Raneri, Chrysler’s vice president of communications, declined to comment on the report.

Chrysler is planning to reveal an updated Jeep Grand Cherokee at the Detroit auto show, and Fiat has been in discussions with Guangzhou to produce Jeeps at a plant in China.

In an interview with the Free Press on Tuesday, Jeep President and CEO Mike Manley declined to provide any updates on discussions with Guangzhou but hinted that he would have news today.

Well, it was the Lie of the Year for 2012, so now that it’s 2013 the truth can be revealed. We’re sure all the critics will be lining up to apologize to Romney.

Update:  OK, can Romney get an apology now?

The Politifact LOTY was about Romney saying Chrysler was going to move it’s US production to China. The article you cite says this facility will be for the Chinese market.

While I don’t doubt that the chance Chrysler moves some of its US production over there, this article does nothing to refute the execrable Politifact.

Politifact can simply be refuted by noting that Romney said he read that Chrysler was moving production. And, yes, there were articles. Thus, he read something and commented on it.

Now, those articles may have had their facts wrong, but its hardly “lying” to comment on something you read in the papers with their multiple layers of editors…

As a conservative who lives in Detroit, it was disheartening to hear Romney disparage and twist facts to try and scare everyone into voting for him. Why would a politician say that Chrysler was moving production from Ohio to China when it was patently not true? Pretty much everyone knows that China is requiring us to produce cars in-country in order to sell cars in their country.

So what if we produce cars in China for China – no jobs taken away here in the process. This is good for American companies.
