NY Times Notices Obama Tax Hikes Are Crushing Americans, Fails to Mention Obama

Posted by on Feb 08, 2013 at 8:03 am

This should be the first in a series. Wait until these poor bastards start have to paying $20,000 a family to start for their free ObamaCare. Still, curiously missing from this story is the name of the man responsible for this massive tax hike.

Like millions of other Americans, they are feeling the bite from the sharp increase in payroll taxes that took effect at the beginning of January. There are growing signs that the broader economy is suffering, too.

Chain-store sales have weakened over the course of the month. And two surveys released last week suggested that consumer confidence was eroding, especially among lower-income Americans.

While these data points are preliminary — more detailed statistics on retail sales and other trends will not be available until later this month — at street level, the pain from the expiration of a two-percentage-point break in Social Security taxes in 2011 and 2012 is plain to see.

“You got to stretch what you got,” said Mr. Phillips, 51, a front-desk clerk and maintenance man for a nonprofit housing group who earned $22,000 last year. “That little $20 or $30 affects you, especially if you’re just making enough money to stay above water.” So he has taken to juggling bills, skipping a payment on one this month and another next month.

“I’m playing catch-up each month,” he said. “You go to the supermarket and you can’t spend what you used to.”

Jack Andrews has it slightly better than Mr. Phillips. He earns a bit more than $40,000 a year manufacturing ceramics in a local factory, but because his wife, Cindy, is disabled, he is the sole breadwinner. Something had to give now that he is earning about $800 less a year, or $66 a month, and it was the couple’s monthly night out.

“It’s just gotten out of reach,” Mr. Andrews said.

But hey, at least they’re paying their fair share now and those evil “rich” people are getting socked.

Of course, taxes are going up on wealthier Americans, too, with a rise in marginal rates on income above $400,000 for individuals and higher taxes on capital gains and dividends. But millions of individual decisions by poorer Americans in Medford, Augusta, Harlem and elsewhere are quickly adding up.

Funny how Obama didn’t mention any of this during the campaign, huh? Another casualty? Obama voters are now eating less healthy.

Ms. Price, 20, whose annual income is $15,000 to $16,000, prefers shopping at Whole Foods, the upscale supermarket chain, which is healthier but more expensive. But since the payroll tax went up, she has been going more often to Publix and Walmart.

“The food that has a lot of fat and food coloring is cheaper,” she said. “It’s a lot more expensive to eat healthier. But now I’m actually looking at the price tag on things rather than grabbing them.”

Darn those evil Republicans! Darn them to heck! We should declare the Republican Party a terrorist organization and destroy them, just like the NRA.

The media is looking more and more Stalinist every day. The chocolate ration has been increased to 20 grams, and we have always been at war with Eastasia.

Of course, it’s all the fault of George W. Bush and those wicked conservatives. If only all opposition to the living god Obama would evaporate, the world could bloom in peace and prosperity, and everyone could have a puppy that’s already paper-trained!

    G-d, I miss Andrew Breitbart.

Thank you for this blog, JWF. I am writing this comment while wearing my pajamas, in your honor.

NYT says “the upscale supermarket chain, which is healthier” but it really just depends on what you buy. It may be healthier than McDonalds, but Publix and Walmart also sell healthy foods. Whole foods just charges more so people are fooled into thinking the food is better!

I be not doing well because of the tax hike. I thoughts the rich would only be taxed. I am a single mother with seven children and cans not make it on $20,000 income. I did this to us? I be wrinting Presdent Obama to asks him we us blacks are not being takin care of. How can George Bush raise taxes when he be gone for 5 years now. I hopes Presdent Obama does something about this or my life will gets worse and I have to move back with my Mom and dad in Compton, CA. Things are really bad and I had to stop using my car and walks to work and I had to get rid of my cell phone because the bill was $130 a month. Please Presdent Obama punish who ever did this to us poor peeples. I voted for you because of your promises !!!!!!!!!

Hmm. My paycheck got stretched back in Jan 2011. I couldn’t afford the increase in my healthcare premium because it meant that my kids would not be able to rent instruments. So, I dropped it. 32% increase after O’care passed. Jan 2013…that same premium is now another $160 more. In effect…my premium doubled. No, I will be paying the penalty tax for sure. And cash for a doc office visit. And should a catastrophe happen…payments. My self-employment is going up, groceries are going up. It’s pretty tight around here.
Meanwhile, there are liberals wondering why “the nation” isn’t outraged over dolphins being killed on purpose by the military. I wonder why they aren’t outraged about the elderly in China living in cages, US unemployment…etc…Oh, I know why. Because they voted for the President…twice…and they think things are O-KAY!!! Idiots.

People were sold a bill of goods. They thought that Obama understood the poor, forgetting or being mislead that Obama came from an affluent background. His mother was a college professor, his grandparents were well off. He has followed an anti capitalist agenda to get what he defines as rich and if others get hurt, then that is justified collateral damage. He believes in caricatures that every ” rich person” is an evil Wall-Street-Fat-Cat that has undeserved wealth that should be taken for the public good. What he does not understand that most people he defines as rich do not fit this cartoon. They are business people that have expenses in capital, inventory, labor that spends almost every dollar of income that they make. But what does that matter, they are just more collateral damage to get the rich evil ones. God help us!

“Something had to give now that he is earning about $800 less a year, or $66 a month, and it was the couple’s monthly night out.”

Poor editing. He’s still earning that money, it’s just the govt take it now. A more accurate way to write that would have been
“…Something had to give now that his take home pay is about $800 less a year, or $66 a month, and it was the couple’s monthly night out….”

    you all make me sick.

can’t you see the president is trying to sleep? he has an early tee time with geithner, and then a fundraiser out in LA.

Of course, it’s NOT actually more expensive to eat healthier, that myth has been exploded by any number of recent studies, as well as disproving the myth of ‘food deserts’ in large cities.

Also, I just got to point out the idiocy of saying Whole Paycheck…I mean Whole Foods is *cheaper* than WMT. Hilarious.

Obama tax hikes are crushing Americans, but then again, ‘What Difference, At This Point, Does It Make’ ?

  12. Larry L on 8/08/13 at 12:52 pm

Probably a non sequitur, but…what the hell is someone who only makes $16K annually doing, by going food shopping at an upscale market like Whole Foods??? I hardly every go into Whole Foods because of the prices, and I’m doing a lot better than $16K.

  13. mark l. on 8/08/13 at 1:14 pm

money generated by the increase in payroll tax…115 billion.
    cost of afghanistan(2012)…114 billion.

libs should be proud. obama is paying for his war. we are ‘winning’ that one, right?

surely it must be going better than Iraq, or the anti-war libs would be hitting the streets*.

    * unless the president is black, liberal, and/or a democrat.

  14. mark l. on 8/08/13 at 1:46 pm

    small addendum…
total war spending, 01-08, 794.7 billion.
total war spending, 09-12, 617.7 billion.

payroll tax? how long before dems are calling it the ‘patriot tax’?

o-‘winner’ is 177 billion away from outspending bush, with four years in office left to go…and two more full years of spending in afghanistan before he starts his victory lap.

the fact that our press still lets him lament bush ‘putting two wars on a credit card’ is hysterically funny/sad.

The Democrats in Chicago are killing each other at a rate of over 500/year. If we are lucky, this epidemic will spread to other northeast and west coast states.

Probably a non sequitur, but…what the hell is someone who only makes $16K annually doing, by going food shopping at an upscale market like Whole Foods???

When your mommy pays your rent and insurance and whatnot, what else are you going to spend your money on?

  17. Z Z on 8/08/13 at 6:25 pm

Look sheeple, all you have to do to avoid the penalty and the buy-in of obummercare is declare your religious status Islam… this way you get it for free. It is a provision that being insurance is a gamble, you do not have to pay a premium cause it is forbidden in Islam to gamble, walaa, free medical, no tax.
kind of suspicious that such a clause would be hidden in a program that forces some to join or face penalties ($20.00 per year for a family of 5) like the rest of us, while out premiums are higher to pay for the freeloaders.

Believe me these ignorant loons do not feel America has suffered enough. They intend to enact regulatory regimes that will destroy entire industries. Then they will find more to destroy. and then even more. There is no end.

Just got the highest electric bill ever. We have lived in the same place for 30 years and this is the highest bill we have ever seen. I knew the prices would go up under Comrade Christ Messiah but this is ridiculous.

The x super richest families that’ve been paying and controlling our government and media are broke. … Yes, “BROKE”, BROKE, and are trying to use our money to pay for their bad world wide investments. …Think about this, if the richest families that own our Treasury. ..Which is a privately owned bank known as the Federal Treasury Reserve Bank of America are still rich, why have they had to borrow 16.6 Trillion to pay interest on their bad investments and to keep the American people fooled. …Legalized robbery, also known to most as a tax or taxation, is being used to bail out the x richest families on earth….Those that have made their wealth the hard way and are not part of the Legalized Mafia families, are targeted for higher tax. ..They are legally being ripped off…Now you know why the media is one sided and the news is about Hollywood and Sport stars and commercials. ..now our government is trying to take our only protection, (our guns)…After our guns Will be our properties. ..We need honest people to run our Country. ..May God Bless America and us….
