Mark Kelly’s Assault Dog Kills Baby Sea Lion

Maybe we should order background checks on people so they’re legally allowed to own such vicious animals. And why didn’t Mark Kelly keep better control of this animal? Why does someone need such a big dog? Is he trying to prove how manly he is or something? How many more sea lions must die?!?!

Gabrielle Giffords’ husband pulled his daughter’s dog off of a sea lion in Laguna Beach over the weekend.

The incident, which was captured on video, happened around 1:40 p.m. Saturday at Goff Cove Beach by the Montage Laguna Beach.

Retired astronaut Mark Kelly’s 18-year-old daughter, who was on vacation with her father and Giffords, was walking the American bulldog on a leash when the 65-pound dog saw the sea lion, ran off and attacked.

Police said the Kelly family did nothing wrong and no one will face any charges.

Nathan hopes the video will serve as a reminder to pet owners that things can quickly go awry with an overpowering dog.

“If you have a dog of that stature and that power, they should be accompanied by someone who can handle a dog that is as powerful as an American bulldog,” he said.

They should probably institute a waiting period before someone demonstrates they can capably handle the dog.

The saddest part is that he’ll still blame the tea party. he still blames them for the shooting in Arizona.

Sea Lions are taking over the docks in S.F. Crapping all over the docks, you can’t get to your boat for these horrible animals. The dog was probably protecting the girl.
But I am sure they will find a way to blame the Republicans for this.

Maybe Jim Carrey can write a horrible country song about this. Cold Dead Seal….

Did they buy this dog from a licensed dealer with a background check, or did they buy it in a parking lot somewhere with no check.

It’s time to close the DOG SHOW LOOPHOLE.

Dogs that are capable of serious violence (Pits, Rotties, AmBulls, etc) are perfectly fine when under control. There should be a fine for letting one off the leash if the dog is not trained…and whether that dog was let off the leash or broke free is irrelevant.

They ain’t that hard to train; you just gotta be smarter than the dog.

    I love the media spin.
‘Mark Kelly [heroically] pulled the dog off…’

In another one I’ve seen – ‘dog freed itself from the owner.’ You know the owner is just a victim…

Wow, how can the media breeze being so deep into liberals’ colon?

  7. Dustoff on 26/26/13 at 11:18 am

Excuse me. Last time I checked. Sea lions in CA are protected.
Yes they did break the law.

Despite all the tongue-in-cheek about background checks for owning such a dog, I seriously believe that dog should be put down and now. That dog has proven itself to be aggressive and uncontrollable. It may not be the dog’s fault (and probably isn’t) as the owner(s) most likely did not have proper training for themselves and the dog. We can not prevent irresponsible behavior but we can punish it aggressively.

  9. Comrade J on 26/26/13 at 11:56 am

    @Dustoff,

You are absolutely correct. They violated a FEDERAL LAW:

It is against Federal Law to feed, touch, harass or move a marine mammal. If you see a violation or if an animal is endangered call NOAA Enforcement at 1-800-853-1964.
    http://www.sealsitters.org/

The federal law is Marine Mammal Protection Act 1972.

Fucking media. How is it the dog was on a leash and then “ran off”? And if any of us wingnutz shot a sea lion with a scary assault sea lion gun, you think the police would let it slide?

I seriously believe that dog should be put down and now. That dog has proven itself to be aggressive and uncontrollable. It may not be the dog’s fault

That’s one of the most idiotic statements I’ve read in while. Congratulations.

    So much win, Michael.

At least now we truly know what this asshole wanted the AR-15 for. That gun store owner should be given a medal by Greenpeace for saving more animals from a violent, untimely death.

  13. Buffalobob on 26/26/13 at 1:38 pm

“Police said the Kelly family did nothing wrong and no one will face any charges”. Really? The dog was not under control of the handler, therefore off leash on a public beach. It killed a protected marine animal. Just how many violations are required to at least ticket this jerk. Does this family not realize that a pit bull killing machine around a disabled woman is a disaster waiting to happen?

  14. Ken in NH on 26/26/13 at 2:11 pm

    lyle,

So would you blame a gun for an AD or the owner/operator? While a dog is animate and has a will of its own, it still requires that the owner train it and handle it properly. A dog will only behave in the manner it was trained or allowed to behave. I am willing to bet that this is not the first time they have had problems with this dog being aggressive. It might not have injured any other animal or person before, but it has likely chased after other dogs and shown aggression towards other animals (and possibly humans) before. In the end, the responsibility lies with the human.

Regardless, the dog must be put down. Once a dog has proven itself to be uncontrollably aggressive, there is no second chance. Second chances means some other animal (likely someone else’s pet) or, worse, someone else is likely to be harmed.

  15. mwfsu84 on 26/26/13 at 2:12 pm

This is a bunch of equinine droppings. In the city of Atlanta, if the owner loses control of a dog in a public place, whether the animal is on a leash or not…it’s an automatic 500.00 fine. Doesn’t matter if the dog attacked or not.

  16. lyle on 26/26/13 at 3:56 pm

I am willing to bet that this is not the first time they have had problems with this dog being aggressive

Facts not in evidence, your honor. Speculation.

Look, I’m a huge dog lover but I believe this maxim: any dog can do anything at anytime if given the chance or provocation. And I also believe there are no bad dogs, just bad owners. As long as a dog is not going after humans, I think putting it down is a little extreme.

And, I’ll add, I NEVER blame a gun for ANYTHING. It’s an inanimate object as lethal as a paperweight when not in someone’s hand(s).

But I’d be willing to think about euthanizing this dog if general rank hypocrisy of its owner could be shown as an aggravating factor in its behavior.

  17. lyle on 26/26/13 at 3:57 pm

Just how many violations are required to at least ticket this jerk.

    None…if you’re a high profile democrat.

  18. Doc on 27/27/13 at 9:11 am

Comparing “dog aggression” to a “gun” isn’t just apples and oranges, it’s apples and balloons. The dog, obviously ill trained and uncontrollable in this case, can perform on it’s own instincts, whereas a gun becomes a tool of its user. These Kelley’s/giffords or whoever they call themselves, are irresponsible dog owners at the very least. They want the public’s sympathy and at the same time want to bully others to their beliefs. Shame on them, glad she no longer represents anyone but herself…him, he can just fade into oblivion. These people are typical democrats…do as I say, not as I do.

I agree about closing the DOG SHOW LOOPHOLE.

When we bought our dog, we went to a licensed breeder, who did a thorough interview and made sure we got the right dog for our family. From her available dogs, she selected the one with the calmest disposition. If she had not done this, we would have had a dog who was much too agressive for our household.

People really should consider the disposition of the breed when they get a dog. A big bulldog is going to kill stuff. It is what it is bred to do. If this is not what you want, forget about asthetics and get a nice Labrador. A good breeder can help you make this decision, which is why we should close the DOG SHOW LOOPHOLE.

Guess what? Animals kill each other. Get a grip.

And seals down in Laguna and Newport have destroyed several boats and buoys. They climb aboard and sun there and chew everything up.

  21. Gilligan on 27/27/13 at 10:24 am

Not being an expert on dog breeds, what is the difference between an American Bull Dog and an American Pit Bull Dog?

Guess what? Animals kill each other. Get a grip.

Guess what? Animals on a leash are supposed to be under control at all times.

Guess what? No one was talking about or gives a fuck about property damage caused by seals, sea lions or unicorns.

Guess what? Your attempt at obfuscation sucked.

  23. Comrade J on 27/27/13 at 11:25 am

Blue Hen is a fan of the “Guess” brand?

That and a liberal hypocrite in the enforcement of laws. Laws for thee but not for me. lol

P.S.: Chance of Blue Hen clucking back starting with “Guess what?”. If she didn’t see this p.s. – close to 99%.

  24. Blue Hen on 27/27/13 at 12:08 pm

    Comrade J

I was responding to the post made by PJ. He/she/it was making the case for ignoring it, not me. Kelly should be prosecuted.

Try reading all of the comments. Lolololol and other such bullshit.

  25. bud on 27/27/13 at 12:17 pm

“If you have a dog of that stature and that power…” 65 pounds??? This dog is the AR-15 of dogs. Not exceptionally large, no more aggressive as any other dog, but a lot of bad press. The smallest of the “large” dogs in my family is over 100 pounds and one is up close to 140. Now, THAT’S a dog. :-)

Got loose from a leash? No, she did what a lot of dog owners do, threw the leash over the dog’s back and left it run, which is ok if the dog is well trained and will come when called. This one obviously wasn’t.

I don’t blame the dog, and putting it down is a bit overboard, but there should definitely be a fine for the owner AND required dog training.

Heck, I blame the Tea Party that Kelly’s crazed bull dog murdered an innocent bystander.

Funny thing, California’s laws stack and stink to high heavens and they don’t have a leash law. Bet if Kelly were a Tea Party “agitator”, he’d be spending the rest of his vacation in a lock up, his bull dog would be put down.

  27. Kevin M on 27/27/13 at 1:02 pm

This could have been a child instead of a seal. If it saves the life of just one child we need to have background checks of all dog owners!

Case of not reading all the comments. Guilty as charged.

This kangaroo court sentences you to staring at nekkid pictures of Margaret Cho. Wait one. That’s too cruel.

    don’t sweat it. It happens.

    Have a good one.

  30. MassJim on 27/27/13 at 3:57 pm

See, if Kelly had had the gun he recently purchase he could have shot the dog and saved the life of an innocent sea lion.

  31. Captain Carl on 27/27/13 at 6:24 pm

Good thing it wasn’t someone’s kid. They should have been ticketed for not having someone in charge of the dog who could handle it.

  32. topperthedog on 27/27/13 at 10:26 pm

Gaaak. I’m not sure where to begin with this. Idiots like Kelly are one of the things that help give the bully breeds their bad reputation.

The dog should have had a good Out/Off command and having one of the bull breeds means knowing what to do when it does grab on to something. Not that easy to do but it can be done. Not doing so makes one no different than the thugs who think a mean dog equals big genitalia.

From the little the video showed, Kelly doesn’t seem to know what to do or have good control of the dog. The girl should not have been in charge of a dog when she can’t control it. That fault lies with her father, not her.

While I don’t know the laws, I can’t help but feel that they’re catching a break under the “Laws are for the Little People, not People like us.” clause.

BTW, predatory aggression does not equal dog aggression does not equal human aggression. They are different things.
