Move over, Ray Rice, New Rochelle has a new hero.
His name is Khalil Edney, a 6-foot-2 senior guard who sent New Rochelle High School to the Section 1 Class AA boys basketball championship with a hard-to-believe, 55-foot buzzer beater at the Westchester County Center Sunday afternoon in a dramatic, 61-60 win over rival Mount Vernon.
“I was just praying for it to go in,” Edney, also a star quarterback who led New Rochelle’s football team to a state championship, told MSG Varsity after the game. “That’s one of them last-second things you throw up and it goes in.”
The two-handed heave, which instantly became a YouTube favorite and was shown on ESPN’s “Sportcenter,” was just the tail-end of a wild play. Edney inbounded the ball with 2.9 seconds left, but his long pass was stolen by Mount Vernon’s Devante Banner near mid-court. Banner tossed the ball up in the air to run out the cock — but didn’t throw it high enough.
