Longtime Red Sox broadcaster Jerry Remy yesterday expressed his “disgust and remorse” after his son, Jared Remy, was charged with savagely stabbing to death his longtime girlfriend, and mother of his 4-year-old child.
“Words cannot describe my wife’s and my grief,” Jerry Remy said in a statement released on his official Twitter account. “Son or not, I am at a loss for words articulating my disgust and remorse over this senseless and tragic act. We are heartbroken.”
Authorities said Jared Remy, 34, killed Jennifer Martel, 27, Thursday at their Waltham townhouse, repeatedly stabbing her in “a long, protracted struggle” that stretched from the kitchen to the living room and eventually outside.
The couple’s 4-year-old daughter was home during the savage attack and two neighbors tried in vain to rescue Martel as she was being stabbed.
Remy had been arrested Tuesday on assault and battery charges, accused of smashing Martel’s head into a mirror, and released on personal recognizance.
Meanwhile, Peter Bella, Remy’s attorney, acknowledged yesterday his hulking client used to be an avid bodybuilder who used steroids.
“He used them in the past,” Bella said. “I don’t know if he used them recently.”
Remy, a former Red Sox security staffer, was fired by the team in 2008 during a steroid investigation.
