Gen. Honore: Send in the National Guard to Control Chicago Violence

Posted by on Feb 22, 2013 at 9:38 am

The man who coined the phrase Stuck on Stupid has some advice for the idiots running Chicago: It’s time to bring in the National Guard to help stem the carnage.

To reduce the homicides and shootings plaguing Chicago streets, elected officials should consider calling on the state and federal governments for help, even the National Guard if necessary, said a retired Army lieutenant general who spearheaded the military response after Hurricane Katrina.

“Just like we do with any disaster. When the tornado comes, or the floods come, the federal government comes in to help,” Russel L. Honore said Thursday at a news conference in Chicago.

“Let’s not let this be about pride. ‘We are big ol’ Chicago, we are too proud, we can handle this.’ Maybe you can’t handle it. If you need help, get the federal government here. But let’s control the streets so children and elderly people can be in a safe community.”

Of course since Chicago pols and the president are hopelessly stuck on stupid they’ll never agree to something like this since it underscores their own incompetence. Besides, they’re too busy demonizing law-abiding gun- owners for their problems.

“Trust me, we can tap this down,” Honore said of the shootings. “It would take a commitment, and it’s not going to be popular. Many people are going to say why are you bringing that to my community? (But) do you want law enforcement or do you want people shooting day and night and destroying the lives of innocent people like the little girl who lost her life here a few weeks ago?”

Arm them all with shotguns!! Trust me on this! I’m the smartest man on the planet! From Delaware. Which isn’t saying much.

Chicago’s violence problem is highly focused among poor young men from fatherless homes. Most of them are black or Hispanic but the problem is based on the rupture of the families.
A larger armed presence would do something to reduce violence but the city can’t directly address the breakdown of families. The broad welfare state could, by making family structure preferable to single-mother-welfare life.

As a bit of an old fart, I remember when sending in the National Guard was discussed to reduce the problems in Los Angeles. As a member of the national guard at the time, we dicussed the challanges facing such a program. Consider the measures used to limit the violance in Iraq. If done in the US the resulting law suits would be, at best, entertaining if not disastertous.

Gen Honore experiance in Katrina is substantially different than in Chicago, where there is a multi-generational breakdown of society’s expectation of being ‘law abiding’

I would also be helpful to consider second order effects of ‘sending in the Guard’

Chicago coloreds can’t be ruled or governed. There is no immediate or temporary solution to their violence. What would the National Guard do and how quickly would people start claiming “racism.”

The breakdown of the family is at the heart of this mess. Unless the National Guard is going to stick around to raise these kids with a sense of morals’ hard work and discipline within a family where the mother and father lead by example nothing is going to change. Sadly even if this were to start today it would.take a generation to see results. No amount of government or gun control or welfare can take the place of a real family that sticks together’ works hard and loves one another!
