Why Is Bill Clinton Appearing With Obama? He’s Paying Off Hillary’s 2008 Campaign Debts

They’re already clearing room under Obama’s bus for Bill Clinton, which makes some sense after he’s been undermining the failed president the past week. But if anyone’s been wondering why Clinton has been out there on the stump recently, this should explain it.

Not for nothing is Bill Clinton showing up for President Obama. Literally — not for nothing.

Clinton’s sudden appearances at Obama campaign events, including three in New York, where he dutifully bashed Mitt Romney, are paid performances. Instead of cash, payment comes in the form of Obama donors being squeezed to help Hillary Rodham Clinton pay down her 2008 campaign debt.

“Bill Clinton never walks away empty-handed,” said an Obama donor who confirmed the arrangement. “There’s always something in it for him.”

At last counting, Hillary Clinton still owes about $240,000, most of it to vendors, including her polling firm. The irony, of course, is that she ran up the tab trying to defeat Obama for the Democratic nomination, but, while serving as secretary of state, cannot participate in partisan politics.

So Bubba is a stand-in and, according to The New York Times, he’s also helping to raise money for an Obama super PAC.

Obama’s promise to help retire Clinton debts came after a negotiated deal, a necessity because there is some lingering bad blood. The key term is that only donors to the president who have maxed out in direct contributions of about $2,500 would be asked to kick in $2,300 to Clinton.

The O comes first, natch. Poor Bill, pimping himself out for Hillary and reduced to sloppy seconds after all these years.

If you were a central figure in the Democratic party, and you realized that the future of that party should not have Obama as its leader, how would you go about preserving the party? Another primary would be expensive. They’re still paying off the last one. And the race card was played against hilary in 2008. It’s one of the few weapons obama has. Outright opposition would also be ugly. but sending signals that might diminish enthusiasm (On Wisconsin), or dampen donations (funding is down) or even diffuse the campaign talking points might serve to ensure that the incumbent becomes more the sacrifical lamb candidate. If Obama wins, Bubba was out on the trail, if he loses, perhaps it’s back to Chicago/Hawaii/Indonesia/Kenya/who knows or cares. And if he’s blown out of the water, without much money spent, then let Romney and the rethuglicans do the dirty work of submitting a budget and being the grown ups as Europe implodes.

Does anyone think Bubba isn’t smart enough to think of such things?
