Con Ed Union Goons Threaten Strike During Massive Heat Wave

Posted by on Jun 30, 2012 at 1:09 pm

This ought to further endear these gangster thugs to the general public.

The second heat wave of the summer will again test the power grid in our area just as a deadline comes for a possible Con Edison strike.

Temperatures reached 98 degrees at LaGuardia Airport Friday, while Newark, N.J. saw 97 and Central Park hit 93.

A mix of sun and clouds continues Saturday and temperatures will linger in the muggy low- to mid-90s. Strong to severe thunderstorms are possible in the afternoon.

Con Edison and its workers are in the middle of contract negotiations, with the current contract for Local 1-2 of the Utility Workers of America expiring at midnight Saturday.

John Melia, a spokesman for the union that represents about 8,500 workers, said there are issues over pensions. He said members in May authorized a strike if necessary.

Why not just authorize these punks to turn off the power entirely? It’s not as if we have any law and order left as it is.

You just don’t get it. NO ONE wants a strike. The redundant upper-upper management DOES NOT CARE about power outages, sick and elderly, or what this could do to the city. They are, and have been for some time, intent on letting us walk tonight so they can start their smear campaign in an attempt to break the union. The only thing they care about is lining their pockets with the fruits of our labor. They hired about 4000 people in the past 8 or so years to be trained by the retiring baby-boomers who essentially built this system. Instead of promoting knowledgable folks who completely understand the many intricacies of this infrastructure, their new business model is to promote kids with a 4.0 GPA in economics and give them a department to run. And you wonder why LIC went dark in ’07? We took this job with the understanding that it was an around the clock, always on call, emergency business. That means the phone rining in the middle of the night, or in some cases in the middle of vacations, because the s**t hit the fan. We accepted that responsibility because with it came the security of a decent pension and terrific medical benefits. Now they want to gut our pension, cut our medical benefits, double the amount we contribute to the benefits and aren’t offering any pay increase. The raised medical costs effectively CUT pay. Of course the union can’t accept this, the company is just waiting for the contract to expire at midnight and forcing us to walk. They will tell the public that these ivy leaguers will handle it. They really believe they can!!! Of course, tomorrow morning they will tell you it is OUR greed. Your rates are determined already by the PSC. The bosses’ compensation is the money that is out of touch with reality. As long as the stock goes up, they’re happy. Once the system starts to cook, and it WILL because they’re losing a lot of skill and experience tonight, let’s see how the stock performs. And if this is a long work stoppage, many of us WON’T be back. That’s what the company wants…a roving force of minimum wage robots who would be happy to do what we do, until they start making a little money, then they can move on to make room for the next batch.

I sincerely hope no one gets hurt or killed. The blood is on Con Ed’s hands. Not the union.

sounds like the union goons are squealing. Fire any who strike during the heat wave and hold the union responsible for any deaths

  3. Swifty55 on 30/30/12 at 8:42 pm

The weekly employee (Union workers) Make up only 5% of the Con Edison budget. The other 95% goes to taxes , fuel costs , materials & Mangement salaries & bonuses. Edison stock went up 50% this year. Why are they being so hard on the Union . Times are good & Prioftable at Edison. CEO Burke got a $15 million dollar bonus this year. Share the wealth with the Union that only makes up 5% of the Budget & keeps the lights on

We are losing power in Brooklyn as we speak people are scambling to keep cool

  4. Madhatton on 30/30/12 at 9:59 pm

Strike cause you are getting shafted by upper mgt? Well welcome to obamaland where our military is going to PAY 400% more for their champus.. And they are doing something heroic .. Con Ed? Merely a job for the super easy early retirement and pensions… Keep voting dem , suckers.. Maybe in winter you can shovel the snow with your sanitation brethren … Or drink beer in the cab and watch the white stuff pile up … Grow up and pay what you voted for … Equality of outcome bro .. We all have lost .. Tag . Your turn .

  5. Rob on 30/30/12 at 11:10 pm

Wow, madhatton, can you be a little MORE obvious that you are part of ‘management’ on some level, somewhere? Tag? You could have taken a test for a con ed or sanitation job if youre really not management. Everyone points the fingers at union workers, theyre easy targets because at one time they signed contracts that made sense, that were deserving, that were consistent with the times and now that times are hard for everyone they dont deserve it???? They should give back or fall as far as some less fortunate? Why? They work hard for it. As stated previously, they work around the clock, above and below ground. While you sleep they make sure youre able to be comfortable where you live n enjoy the comforts their company provides!!!!! Youre selfish and bitter and jealous. And as a side note, read the paper once in a while, yes the sanit dept had some bad seeds that were reprimanded, but the worked 12 to 13 hour shifts daily for weeks and weeks with that storm. They too probably had families they didnt see around the holidays more than a couple of hours a week! Check the reports on asshole politicians like hanahan who lied. And bloomberg who lied. And the fdny who vouched for sanitation begging the mayor n his right hand man for a state of emergency to be declared, only to be denied because no one was around or working with balls enough to make that call. Sanmen were around n working…con ed was out there. That wasnt a fuck up from the top? Check the investigation reports on the sanitation dept… short, it was decided unanimously that THEY WERE NOT AT FAULT! So go flash a few phone pics of union workers sweating their asses off, or freezing, or waterlogged in the rain whike theyre working instead of wasting all your time being so anti-union. Pensions are earned douchebag. Do what ya gotta do, con ex and let the overpaid under-qualified big wigs go to bed with the blood of anyone harmed on their hands! Good luck.

Listen they are not goons. They are fighting for their union workers. My husband works 80 hours a week away from his family so new York can run all the electricity it does. Most of the union workers work day and night and now they want to take away very important things from them. It’s wrong. So unless you know what is going on I would just keep your ignorant mouths shut. Also if you understood unions you would also understand that if one person says strike they all have to. It’s a union. So stop your nonsense and worry about your own job.

  7. neil on 1/01/12 at 12:32 am

Why not pay people what they deserve and settle it on time. Why should they work without a contract? It is a coincidence that there contract ends during a hest wave, not a thug ploy.

  8. gracie on 1/01/12 at 12:42 am

Can you rank these, in ascending order, like military ranks: union goons, union thugs, union gangster thugs. Thank you.

  9. gracie on 1/01/12 at 12:44 am

Darn it — I overlooked one term. Add this to the list above: union punk.

    Thanks again!

  10. Tom on 1/01/12 at 12:48 am

Hear, hear Rob! Did it ever occur to those who bash unions for being greedy and overpaid, that maybe non-union workers are UNDERpaid. The only answer to organized greed by companies is organized labors by the masses. In a true capitalist economy, we just sell our skills, and we deserve to be well compensated for those skills, especially for those of us who work in life threatening situations. 140+ degrees uinderground in Manhattan working with dangerous high voltage, and some have the nerve to call us greedy goons. Talk to Kevin Burke about being a goon. $15 M bonus last year….what a joke. If people want to complain about something, complain about the bosses who have no respect for our work, and our living situation.

  11. Team union on 1/01/12 at 12:53 am

Tom. So it’s the union workers fault that they work for a union? Or that some people don’t ? They are not fighting over pay get facts straight. And union workers are not overpaid believe me. I’m done responding to ignorance its frustrating how people talk so much behind a computer screen. Everyone has a right to fight for they believe in. It’s America. But sitting behind a computer screen and typing your complaints is not how you do it. I closed mouth does not get fed. So fight for what you believe in and say what u need to bc you only get one go at life. I’m done here

  12. Team union on 1/01/12 at 12:59 am

Omg Tom im sorry I didn’t read your whole post my bad. I thought you were against the union in sorry im tired and stressed. I overlooked the rest. Lol

  13. Tom on 1/01/12 at 12:59 am

Team Union, I was agreeing with you. I actually work for Con Edison. I know what we are fighting for. WE are fighting for my defined pension plan, WE are fighting for my retirement age to remain the same, WE are fighting for my medical plan to stay the same at reasonable prices, and WE are fighting for many other things. I know what we are fighting for, because I am one of 8,500 local 1-2 members waiting to hear what we are going to do. Read my post again. I work hard, and keep people comfortable in their AC in the winter, keep their heat on in the winter, and their lights on all year round.

  14. Team union on 1/01/12 at 1:01 am

I feel bad now. And stupid. Sorry again. These ignorant ppl just bother me. But they are not worth it.

  15. Team union on 1/01/12 at 2:51 am

So if they get locked out are they still goons? How will u respond if that happens. That’s the mgmt telling them they can’t come to work. Just curious what the ignorant ppl will say to that.

Funny shit union thugs . Con ed is the one that decided the contract would expire in June because there is a heat wave going on now wtf would you like the union to do tell con ed its ok w’ell wait till Sept ? notice the numbers 5000 supervisors to 8 500 workers . Think they are a tad heavy with management ? And the best part out of 5000 supervisors 4500 of them are college kids that dont know their ass from their elbow . Con Ed and their greed are causing this not the union

  17. gracie on 1/01/12 at 5:32 pm

Tom and Team Union — Guys, guys , guys, it was a joke* about how anti-unionists always use thugs, goons, punks, and gangsters in describing union members. I’m the daughter of a former union organizer, for heaven’s sake.

    *Apparently not a good one.

  18. Mike local 1-2 on 2/02/12 at 2:47 am

Some people need to get facts straight before talking about union workers..and know how the fat cats like getting rich from our blood sweat n tears… Funny how on holidays or storms most home with their families while its mandatory that we leave ours and come in and are expected to work double shifts. All the union wants is fair contract for its members and on other note who the hell are these J/off’s to give the selfs 20% pay raise and not want to give its employe’ s a dime.. WE KEEP THE CITY RUNNING..WHAT EVER IT TAKES… LOCAL 1-2..

  19. Blue Hen on 2/02/12 at 10:03 am

    1. Jimmy Hoffa was unavailable for comment.
    2. This country has seen unions rioting, scaring peoples kids by staging stunts at people’s homes, and demanding things that most people haven’t seen in years (low cost medical plans, defined benefit pension plans). Even the military is getting it in the neck from the Dear Leader (jacking up Tri-care fees). DO you care? If not, why not?
    3. You want money? Of course you do; you’re a union thug. Go try to get back some of the tens of millions of dollars unions flushed down the toilet in Wisconsin.
    4. You seem to believe that you can turn from a snarling, threat spewing mob to Snow White. It ain’t gonna happen, with a record low labor participation rate.
    5. The sweet deal the UAW got at the expense of creditors, dealerships and suppliers isn’t helping.
    6. You whine that unions are getting the blame, but then instantly blame ConEd. So the blame game is on only if YOU get to play it. If they are so eeeeeevvvvviiilll through and through, what does that make you?

Learn the facts about how unions benefit the average worker. This is about corporate greed. The union wants to keep what they already have. The economy might be bad but not for con ed. This company is making record profits and increased the pay and bonuses for their upper management by double digit percentages. But they want to squeeze the middle class union worker. It makes me sick when a regular worker talks down about unions. Unions helpes bring basic rights to the average worker do your research. And the company has LOCKED OUT the union workers the workers did not strike. Wake up america or it will be too late when you realize who the real enemy is!
