Boy, this whole smart diplomacy thing is really reaping dividends now, isn’t it? Following a day of abject humiliation for the Obama administration, first apologizing, then retracting an apology, now four Americans, including our ambassador, have been murdered in Libya.
Somehow this will be spun into Mitt Romney’s fault before long.
The U.S. Ambassador to Libya, Christopher Stevens, was killed when suspected Libyan religious extremists stormed the U.S. Consulate in Benghazi late Tuesday night, according to Libyan Deputy Prime Minister Mustafa Abushagour.
Libyan officials spent the night in a manhunt trying to find those responsible for the killing of the American diplomat and three other American employees of the consulate. It was unclear whether the bodies of the Americans had been recovered.
“I condemn the cowardly act of attacking the U.S. consulate and the killing of Mr. Stevens and the other diplomats,” said Mr. Abushagour. “This is an attack on America, Libya and free people everywhere.”
But, but, but there’s an obscure YouTube video that insulted Mohammed, and we just can’t have that!
I’m almost nostalgic for the calm, steady hand of Jimmy Carter right about now.
Meanwhile, as that region of the world explodes, the only democratic leader pleads for a meeting with Obama. But he’s too busy.
It’s quite obvious what’s going on in the Mideast, but does the crumbling Obama administration even realize it?
“If there are simultaneous outrages in both Egypt and Libya on 9/11, it was a deliberate, planned insult to the United States,” says Gingrich. “No one in the country should be confused about the coordination, the viciousness, and the determination to humiliate the U.S.”
“For the Obama embassy in Cairo to apologize to the fanatics who have stormed the embassy and burned the flag, for the fact that we cherish freedom of speech, is insulting beyond belief,” Gingrich continues. “And whoever wrote that should be fired tomorrow summarily. And the Congress should pass resolutions condemning the State Department statements and calling on the president to stand up for America.”
The tragic irony is the president who’s made it a centerpiece of his foreign policy to apologize for America is now apologizing for apologizing. Could he be any more pusillanimous?
