The sad tale of six-year-old Etan Patz began back in May 1979 and to this day his disappearance has remained a mystery. Well, it appears there may finally be a major break in the case. Tomorrow would be the 33rd anniversary.
A person is in custody for the 1979 disappearance of Etan Patz, NYPD Commissioner Ray Kelly confirmed this morning.
Kelly issued a statement stating that the person made statements to NYPD detectives implicating himself in the boy’s disappearance.
Earlier this year, officials searched a SoHo basement looking to find the Etan’s remains. The 6-year-old vanished in 1979, but the recent search came up empty.
Patz was last seen on the morning of May 25, 1979.
Tomorrow would be the 33rd anniversary, so it’s possible this could just be some nutjob looking for attention.
Update: Suspect is named Pedro Hernandez.
