Strange How the Media Didn’t Care About Infidelity in 1992 and 2008

Posted by on Jan 20, 2012 at 7:55 am

Say what you will about Newt Gingrich and his numerous wives and affairs, and it’s already become an obsession with the media that will do anything to derail the GOP and re-install Obama in the White House. Back in 1992 all it took was a “60 Minutes” interview with the Clintons and that was the end of the Gennifer Flowers story.

In 2008 it was already well known John Edwards was cheating on his wife, but the media gave him a free pass. Why? Because he’s a Democrat, of course. Democrats can do no wrong, but if you’re a Republican with any infidelities in your past then you’re fair game. This isn’t to excuse Gingrich. Let’s just see what the left always clamors for: Fairness.

It’s the double standard we live with.

Note how the lamestream media is pummeling Newt, as opposed to the way they treated the now-indicted John Edwards in 2008. Edwards had a knocked-up New Age gal pal who had picked him up in a singles bar in Manhattan. He was using campaign cash to keep her and the unborn love child on the lam, shuttling them from one posh resort hotel suite to another, while Edwards’ loyal aide lied that he was the father of the future Frances. And don’t forget the XXX amateur videotapes.

Surely a much more serious breach of marital fidelity than Newt’s serial adultery? Plus, a federal crime if you believe the U.S. attorney in Raleigh. The Edwards scandal was on the front page of the National Enquirer every week. But the moonbat media was unanimous in its verdict. … Nothing to see here, move along.

Did I mention that John Edwards is a Democrat?

If ABC’s “investigative” reporter Brian Ross had any balls, he’d go track down Vera Baker. Remember her?

While you’re trying to figure out who she is, enjoy the opening of last night’s debate.

Vera Baker was ‘leaked’ to distract from the real story about Barack’s one true love- sausage.

John King = Deer in headlights, empty CNN suit, non-reporter. non-journalist, tool of the left.

Any American who watches the first 3:00+ of this debate and comes to any other conclusion than that the American MSM’s playbook is to assassinate the character of Republicans while avoiding Democrat baggage, is deluded, misinformed, blind and/or on the DNC dole.

I’m not a Newt voter, but this move by CNN’s henchmen, for whom King is simply a pawn, is repugnantly transparent and shows zero journalistic integrity.

  3. JDW on 20/20/12 at 9:56 am

Yeah – I agree about the whole Vera Baker thing. All Newt has to do is drop that name one or two times during the next debate “aren’t you curious about Vera Baker?” to a moderator and they would be FORCED to address the story. It’d be schweeeeet!!!

The corporate “media” is interested in ratings and making money off those ratings. If you believe there is any other motive Adam Smith would like a couple hours of your time.

  5. AT on 20/20/12 at 10:49 am

Apparently this only matters if you claim to be a Family-Values candidate….so I guess Liberal Democrats NEVER have to worry about being called to task for infidelity.

  6. Stan on 20/20/12 at 12:00 pm

I think part of the media’s obsession with this sort of thing is a result of living in an echo chamber and the resulting near complete misunderstanding of, distain for, and underestimation of the people who are considering voting for a Republican candidate. In the process, they’re extincting themselves.

  7. Cog Nit Tivedissonance on 20/20/12 at 1:59 pm

You’re right — You could not find a better champion for preserving the sanctity of marriage than Newt.

  8. Mike on 20/20/12 at 2:01 pm

There is a highly relevant issue that isn’t some media bias boogeyman. There are quite a few people who believe that a politician’s personal life is irrelevant, UNLESS he is trying to regulate the personal lives of others.

John Edwards wasn’t trying to prosecute another politician for cheating on his wife in 1998. Newt Gingrich was. John Edwards wasn’t part of the “Moral Majority,” one of whose primary principals was to protect the supposed sanctity of marriage. Hence, it is more relevant that Newt cheated than it is that John Edwards cheated. It would be similarly irrelevant if Ron Paul had an affair.

For another example: Larry Craig was a staunch opponent of gay rights. So it is highly relevant that he was caught trying to hook up with men. Barney Frank is gay… and despite the fact that this is widely known, it isn’t an “issue.” This isn’t media bias, it’s a matter of what you stand for.

This isn’t bias, it’s exposing hypocrisy.

  9. Darth Balls on 20/20/12 at 2:04 pm

Hmmmm. I don’t know. Could it be because of the blatant hypocrisy that Republicans show – you know, given that they’re the Family Values(tm) party and all? How they’re constantly trying to legislate their morals on the rest of us?

Do as I say, not as I do.

You’re the ones carrying around the “traditional family values” flag. Maybe if your practiced what you preached most of the country wouldn’t think that you’re insufferable assholes. But then you wouldn’t be repugnantans would you.

  11. Bob on 20/20/12 at 2:31 pm

Hah. You dumbasses whine about how your poor cheating dishonest candidates can’t get a break. That’s why you always lose, because instead of actually coming up with some decent ideas y’all just whine about how the big bad media is so unfair. Grow up, stop whining, get off your asses and do some real work, crybabies

  12. KipingKat on 20/20/12 at 3:36 pm

Pretty sure Edward’s infidelity was a major item on every single major news outlet for weeks. It ruined his run and the resolution of it went on in the media for years.

There was more coverage of his infidelity than there was of Newts.

And I will point out that Newt and others that preach “family values” while abandoning their cancer stricken wife for younger poon are hypocritical SOBs.

  13. Kurt Montandon on 20/20/12 at 3:41 pm

Exactly! Just look at how Edwards’ affair in no way got non-stop coverage for months, long after he dropped out of the race, and how he went on to an ever-more successful political career.

Unlike that poor bastard David Vitter, the Republican Senator who got caught soliciting prostitutes, and … uh, wait, no – that barely made the news and he’s still in office. Hmm, that’s probably the liberal media’s fault somehow anyways, we’ll just have to work on the spin.

  14. Exboyracer on 20/20/12 at 3:58 pm

You know when you wrap yourself in the “family values” blanket and the “I possess a higher morality than you” flag and wear the “I can deny responsibility because I am forgiven” then you deserve to be called out on your hypocracy.

By the way didn’t Newt play the media like a fiddle while he was going after Clinton for doing the same thing that he was doing.

Hypocrisy should be called out. It is lying and manipulation.

Why do you have a problem with that. Is it because one of these debates can not proceed for 3 minutes before the hypocrisy meter blows a gasket.

  15. Hawk044 on 20/20/12 at 4:40 pm

Uh…last I checked, it cost Edwards his political career. No one cares once you’re out of it. Cain? Gone. No one cares now. Edwards? Gone. NO ONE CARES NOW.

1992 saw Bill Clinton dogged by rumors, but no smoking gun. Herman Cain had no such luxury.

Clinton became a sitting president accused of infidelity and lying (both true, unfortunately)…WITH the smoking dress- er- gun. They impeached him. That was it. The GOP went after him and all they got was a meaningless impeachment.

Hath you forgotten Gary Hart? Rumors (and at least one picture) of his womanizing cost him his candidacy.

Newt has an ex-wife problem…insomuch as they like to talk.

Claim double-standard all you want, but to do so is to ignore some inconvenient holes in your claim.

  16. Ian on 20/20/12 at 5:31 pm

Anthony Weiner, Eliot Spitzer, Bill Clinton?

In the meantime, where was the coverage of Senator Ensign’s affair and subsequent payoffs to the husband of his lover? Another liberal conspiracy?

  17. BJM on 20/20/12 at 5:40 pm

My. my the trolls are as thick as green companies sucking off the taxpayers tit aren’t they?

And I will point out that Newt and others that preach “family values” while abandoning their cancer stricken wife for younger poon are hypocritical SOBs.

The cancer stricken first wife meme has been proved false. Marianne Gingrich cleaned out the house and left the marriage in ’87…six years before he took up with Callista.

You really must try to keep up, you’re working from old talking points.

  18. suthrnboy on 20/20/12 at 5:43 pm

Newt Gingrich was having an affair while he was trying to impeach Bill Clinton for having an affair. What don’t you get about this, dolt?

  19. Kurt Montandon on 20/20/12 at 6:16 pm

My. my the trolls are as thick

By trolls, you of course mean people bringing up inconvenient “facts” occurring in a place called “reality” that completely discredit your supposed point.

  20. Johnny Whistle on 20/20/12 at 6:43 pm

This is a joke, right? It has to be. You couldn’t get away from the media coverage of both Clinton in ’92 and Edwards in ’08. Edwards’ life was RUINED by the story. Can the right please go back to acting like tough guys? This whole whiny victim thing is getting kinda creepy.

  21. mike on 20/20/12 at 7:08 pm

Yeah, the media NEVER gives Democrats a hard time.

    *COUGH*Anthony Weiner*COUGH*

Get real, man. Newt is a hypocrite and a dirtbag and if anything is being treated with kid gloves, given how much hell he gave Clinton for his transgressions…stop trying to move the goalposts.

  22. The Razor on 20/20/12 at 7:23 pm

Sounds like the author of this blog lived under a rock in ’08 and ’92. Or has the memory of a mole rat.

  23. I'msoso on 20/20/12 at 8:53 pm

Check out the divorce court records, read a few of them.

Newt and his wife can not hold a light to most of them.

In most of them the wife’s claims are nuts and the husband hide’s the money for years before he gets caught with the twins who work in his office.

So, all of a new moment the U.S. A. is all good and no one ever did a bad thing.

  24. Blue hen on 20/20/12 at 9:39 pm

What utter crap. Edwards was protected by the media. The National Enquirer broke the story. Several outlets refused to cover it, claiming it wasn’t relevant (Mr. “there are two Americas” Yeah, the rich ambulance chasing lawyers and the rest of us ). And this was while he and his wife, who was battling cancer at the time were campaigning. There’s another difference between Gingrich and Edwards. Edwards really DID screw over a woman with cancer. The end result was that he appears to have stolen from his campaign to pay off the mistress and fund the kid. None of this appeared until after he flamed out. But what else is John King going to lead off with? “Speaker Gingrich, what do you think about Obama’s home state getting its rating canned after raising taxes?” From the network that made a sweetheart deal with Saddam Hussein comes the Mother of all debate questions.

Eventually, Gingrich is going to run out of ex-wives tales. And Obama’s record still sucks, and Biden isn’t getting any smarter. Ask the fans in SF.

    *COUGH*Anthony Weiner*COUGH*

Go suck on a cough drop idiot. Brietbart did more to expose Weiner than the MFM. That included confronting Weiner and demanding that he retract or defend the false charge he invented against Breitbart.
“The media” didn’t nail Weiner. They finally covered something that Brietbart and the blogosphere pursued.

Crank out a fake ANG memo with a forged signature and now we’re talking major league coverage.

  26. SDN on 20/20/12 at 10:15 pm

Newt vs Clinton: What part of PERJURY don’t you trolls get? The Bar Association didn’t have a problem when it yanked his law license.

Anthony Wiener: Breitbart got that scoop.
Clinton ’92: More substance than Cain. by a bunch. And none of the bimbos were convicted con artists with no visible means of support living in Cain’s head political guy’s apartment building.

When we can have a Congressman admit to ass-raping a Congressional page, not resign, and then get re-elected multiple times (Studds), we can talk about hypocrisy.

Face it liars, fuck off and die. Ain’t listening to you no more.

  27. Kurt Montandon on 20/20/12 at 11:04 pm

And yet, for all the Republican persecution complexes in the comments whining about that oh-so-liberal media (which covered the Edwards story to an absurd degree, fix, six, and seven years after he was out of office), I still see no explanation as to why Senator David Vitter has been given a free pass by the so-called-liberal-media (and remains in office) for breaking the law by hiring whores. Or why it took more than a year and an FBI investigation, and minimal media coverage, to force Republican Sen. John Ensign out of office after adultery and money laundering.

This is, of course, all just an attempt to blame liberals for Newt Gingrich’s serial adultery. It can’t possibly be his own fault, after all. It’s because he’s such a patriot, and so, so persecuted.

  28. Blue Hen on 20/20/12 at 11:40 pm

Gee, maybe its because some court hasn’t yet gotten over it prosecution complex. Despite the fact that Edwards was wealthy, connected and powerful, he still has to stand trial since he was indicted.

Absurd degree = how dare you question one of your betters.

    man up princess.

  29. Big Daddy on 21/21/12 at 12:33 am

    Ummmm…Vera Baker?

It’s not about whether Newt had or didn’t have an affair (or 3 for that matter) it’s about whether he left his wives each time they got sick with life threatening illnesses. If it doesn’t make you ponder how a man who treats his “loved ones” like this would care about the average American, then I wonder about the Newt supporters.

But hey, he’ll get trounced in the general election anyway.

A hard-core, Hillary supporter (remember the acronym PUMA?) who is also quite flamboyant about many things, has been asking and answering the “is Barack Obama gay?” question.

Along the way, he may have described the rumors about Vera Baker as, well find out for yourself at the multi-part blog post with YouTube videos here =>

  32. Rev Dr E Buzz on 21/21/12 at 6:35 pm

Remember: CNN is a Rev. Wright-free zone.

Hey libbies, this family values horseshit is so 1988.

BTW, are yous aying that serial adultery and screwing around on yoru cancer stricken wife (Johnny Edwards) is ok? Knocking up campaign staffers and shoving stogies into interns during phone calls with heads of state is ok too.

Yes, you are very disturbed people.

  33. VoteOutIncumbents on 22/22/12 at 1:02 pm

I think at this point we have to realize the probability that some in the MSM are on the Democrat payroll. Tune in any of the national “news” broadcasts any night…the anchors spew Democrat talking points, one after the other.

I think it was over for the MSM in ’04 when Rather got caught using a forged memo about Bush, fifty days out from the presidential election to try and save Kerry.

Thanks to people on the net who noticed things like typeface that didn’t exist in the seventies, Rather failed. Lost his job too, heh.

Still, ABCBSNBCNNPRPBS keep trying. They DO want socialism…and they love Obami.

  34. Blue Hen on 22/22/12 at 9:12 pm

Anyone think it’s a coincidence that George Shuffalupagus went from being a creature in the Clinton Administration to throwing bombs at Republican candidates during debates? Yeah that jhappens all the time to Democrats. Sure it does.

  35. bill on 25/25/12 at 9:46 pm

Anyone who thinks the media is not biased should read the CBS insider book “Bias” by Bernard Goldberg. For those of you who wish to stay uninformed, just rest easy in the fact that most “news” rooms are at least 80% democrat…which does not come close to mirroring the country which they purport to serve.
