A person being processed at the local police department after an arrest grabbed one of the officers’ guns, and shot three of them before being shot to death in return fire this morning, police said.

The person had been arrested on a domestic violence charge, but while being processed in the station, the person grabbed one of the officers’ guns and began firing, said Deputy Chief David Harkins in a brief statement to the media.

One of the officers was shot in the abdomen, just below their bulletproof vest, Harkins said. Two of the other officers were wounded.

The police returned fire and killed the assailant, the deputy chief said.

The officer who was shot in the abdomen was taken to Cooper University Medical Center in Camden, and remains in stable condition.

Hm. Sounds like a protocol failure to me. A suspect should be in handcuffs in any area where officers are carrying guns — at least that’s the general rule. Of course I don’t know about this specific case.
