So you’re the attractive young wife of a much older high-profile politician, you’re reportedly injured during a fracas with a younger ex-boyfriend in the wee hours of the morning and you also happen to be an elected official who’s now entering rehab. Stuff like this is tabloid manna from heaven. Well, it would be if the parties involved were Republicans. The fact they’re prominent Democrats in the Bay Area?
Nah, not worth mentioning.
Just days after a mysterious incident in which she was reportedly attacked at a Newark motel by an ex-boyfriend, Alameda County Supervisor Nadia Lockyer said Tuesday that she has enrolled in a program to be treated for chemical dependency.
Lockyer, 40, the wife of state Treasurer Bill Lockyer, said in a statement that she entered a “wellness and recovery center” last week for treatment of the unspecified chemical dependency and “my injuries from the assault.”
She also said she was being treated for “chronic pain from a past debilitating car accident,” without giving specifics.
“Alcoholism and addiction are diseases from which many of us suffer, and unfortunately I have not been spared,” Nadia Lockyer said. “I understand that the public and the press have an interest in the health of their elected officials. That is why I am publicly disclosing my medical condition and that I am seeking treatment.”
The statement did not say how long the treatment may take, only that she planned to continue “doing the work I was elected to do.”
Few details have been released about the incident that apparently led Lockyer to enroll in the treatment center.
According to Newark police logs, a 911 call came in at 2:40 a.m. Feb. 3 from the Homewood Suites on Cedar Boulevard regarding an altercation involving a man and a woman.
“The male left prior to officers arriving,” the log said. “The female suffered injuries to her head and neck. She was medically treated.”
Bill Lockyer told us that he and his wife argued over the phone earlier in the evening, and that when Nadia Lockyer hung up, she headed off to the hotel to meet with a former boyfriend.
She portrayed the boyfriend as a troubled person and “thought he was having a crisis,” said Bill Lockyer, who added that he and his wife had recently reunited after a separation. “She thought she could get him to calm down.
“He turned out to be angry … and she was violently assaulted by someone she was trying to help,’’ Lockyer said. He said the ex-boyfriend “seems to have a long history of involvement with the criminal justice system.”
No one has been arrested.
Every relevant detail imaginable would have been unearthed and reported if they were Republicans. Curiously, the word Democrat isn’t even mentioned. Odd how the alleged perp hasn’t been arrested either, considering he supposedly assaulted a public official.
The Contra Costa Times isn’t protecting the party affiliation, at least.
An Orange County native, Nadia Lockyer is the daughter of the late Wallace Davis, who was among Santa Ana’s first Latino lawyers and a renowned immigrant-rights advocate. She earned an undergraduate degree in sociology from UCLA in 1993 and a Loyola law degree in 1996. She was admitted to the State Bar of California in 1997.
After law school, she entered Democratic politics by serving as a member of the legal team for Rep. Loretta Sanchez, D-Anaheim, and raising funds for Santa Ana Democrat Lou Correa’s first Assembly bid.
While an associate at the firm of Best, Best & Krieger, she won election in 1998 to one term on the Santa Ana Unified School District board. Gov. Gray Davis in 2002 named her to the California Commission on Teacher Credentialing, and a week later the Democratic Leadership Council named her its “New Dem of the Week.”
She was reportedly involved in a 2002 car accident that left her with serious injuries including many broken bones.
She married Bill Lockyer in April 2003, after reportedly having met him at a state Democratic event the previous year. Their son was born in June 2003.
Seems like a hastily arranged marriage.
