Win the Super Bowl and get engaged the same night. Pretty heady stuff for New York Giants rookie linebacker Greg Jones.
For Greg Jones, winning the Super Bowl was only the first life-altering event that happened on Sunday night.
Minutes after the game, amid the confetti and celebration, the Giants’ rookie linebacker dropped to a knee and proposed to his girlfriend, Amanda, in a moment similar to Boise State’s Ian Johnson getting engaged after the Fiesta Bowl a few years ago.
Obviously, Amanda said yes. And then began to cry.
“She was bawling,” Jones said this morning as he and his teammates left the Marriott Downtown to board their flight back home. “I was like, ‘I don’t know how long she’s going to keep crying.’”
Jones, a sixth-round pick who began the season as a starter on defense and has been a contributor on special teams, had practice-squad tight end Christian Hopkins hold the ring for him during the game. Had the Giants lost, he would’ve waited for a better moment.
Jones has known Amanda for three years. The two met at Michigan State and have been dating for a little over a year. Given their history and the setting, Jones didn’t have to sell this one very hard.
