Happy News: Newsweek Layoffs to Begin Today

Best news I’ve had all afternoon.

Newsweek’s print edition is ending in a matter of weeks, and the anticipated staff changes have already begun. Layoffs are expected to be announced this afternoon, a tipster tells us. Meanwhile, we hear that a few editors are proactively jumping ship.

Now where’d I leave that world’s smallest violin?

Anyone notice since the election nobody is being hired anywhere but massive layoffs are occurring all over the place? Funny how that’s working out.

From Tina Brown’s staff email:

The sad moment has arrived when we must go forth with the editorial staff reductions that we discussed in person with all of you several weeks ago. Employees in the affected positions will be notified today. Much of this has already happened on the business side, and today we will be letting staff on the editorial side know where we will be eliminating positions. This is a very difficult day, and one that we approach with enormous regret.

You might not have a job, but you helped get Obama re-elected, and isn’t that all that matters?

The lead headline on an AP story at the Comcast news feed this morning:

“Sandy is thought to have slowed US hiring in Nov.”

Right. It’s all Sandy’s fault. Nothing to do with the election.

The NY Times is going to be buying out (or laying off, whichever comes first) 30 more joun0lists (sic) as well. But not Paul Krugman (for whom uncertainty is a myth. )

The thing about useful idiots is even though they cease to be useful, they’re still idiots.
