EU Wins Nobel Peace Prize

Geez, these tools are running out of leftists to give this dopey award to, apparently. Now they’re awarding it to a faltering group of nations.

The European Union was awarded the Nobel Peace Price on Friday for “transforming Europe from a continent of war to a continent of peace.”

The award comes as EU countries try to resolve a debt crisis that threatens to plunge the global economy into recession and break up the EU, which coalesced after the Cold War.

As such, the Nobel Prize Committee’s decision can been seen as a political boost for the EU, meant to encourage the nations to stay together during the economic crisis.

So a group of nations mired in crisis have brought peace to the continent? Um, OK, whatever. I guess all those riots in Greece are mostly peaceful.

If they wanted to actually award a country for transforming a continent from war to peace, maybe they could look west and award it to the United States, the country that save Europe over 60 years ago.

It’s rather silly to award the Nobel Prize to a group like this. The International Committee of the Red Cross made sense; the political confederation of Western Europe really doesn’t.
That said, the EU has been a force for peace in a region that has seen many disastrous wars. We of the post-WWII generation don’t understand, except from history books, that Europe was mostly at war from the days of Celtic tribes until 1945.
I have plenty of issues with how the EU operates and how most of Europe operates. The Europeans have chosen this path as voters, though, and the EU operates without occupying armies. Too many bureaucrats, too many rules, too much stifling — yes. But self-imposed.
And members of the EU or the Common Market before it haven’t fought since their founding. Something to be said for that.

Let’s be honest: the EU could use the money. What is the prize amount, about $1.4 million or so?

Lets see, the EU was formed in 1993, less than 20 years ago, well after most of the countries had sacrificed most of their military to feed their social programs. They could do this because the US military was there to act when they could not.

This is another point in favor of the US winning the prize. We kep the peace for them.

However, George Marshall’s win after WWII could be seen as the reward for saving Europe back in the day.

Watch them fight over it. That would be comedy gold.
