“Democratic-leaning” Super-PAC Run by David Brock Attacks Romney

The laughable Obama effort to call for “transparency” from Mitt Romney is now being aided by a far-left PAC, yet when it comes to transparency in reporting, don’t expect it from Obama’s stenographers at The Hill.

A Democratic-leaning super-PAC is aiding the Obama campaign’s push to force GOP presidential front-runner Mitt Romney to release more of his past tax returns, just as the president is calling on his likely general-election rival to be “transparent” with his finances.

The outside spending group, American Bridge 21st Century, released a video Sunday titled, “What’s Mitt Hiding?” in conjunction with a website urging voters to sign a petition demanding to see the former Massachusetts governor’s past returns.

“Why should we believe that Mitt’s got nothing to hide? Between his Swiss bank accounts and off-shore investment funds in the Caymans, don’t you think there’s probably more going on than meets the eye?,” says the text posted along with the YouTube video.

American Bridge posted a series of tweets Monday, including one that focuses on the 2008 presidential campaign, slamming Romney for not revealing his previous returns and directing followers to the new website.

Speaking to Univision on Sunday in an interview at the Summit of the Americas in Colombia, President Obama said candidates for president should be “as transparent as possible.”

“I think that it’s important for any candidate in public office to be as transparent as possible, to let people know who we are, what we stand for,” Obama said. “And you know, I think that this is just carrying on a tradition that has existed throughout the modern presidency.”

Except for his, of course. So, champ, how about those college transcripts of yours?

As to this “Democratic-leaning” group, it seems they lean decisively to the left.

American Bridge 21st Century is a progressive research and communications organization committed to holding Republicans accountable for their words and actions and helping you ascertain when Republican candidates are pretending to be something they’re not.

We understand the frustration you feel with elected officials who campaign on one set of principles but govern by another, because we feel it too. We believe you deserve better than that. We think our elected officials should have one set of principles, not one for each set of special interests they represent.

If I didn’t know better, I’d swear they’re talking about Obama. And you’ll never guess what Democrat-leaning hero is running this outfit.

American Bridge 21st Century was started by former journalist and liberal activist David Brock, who staffed the super PAC with former Hill staffers and employees of his nonprofit, Media Matters for America.

And hey, what about that transparency?

The group has not reported making any independent expenditures to the Federal Election Commission, but the group has published a number of anti-Romney videos on its website.

Gee, I wonder who could be funding this outfit? And why isn’t the link to Media Matters mentioned?

Here’s who’s paying for this shadowy group. You’ll notice the unions are the biggest donor. Curiously, there’s an oil company president who gave $150,000. Who knew Media Matters was in bed with Big Oil?

By the way, they’ve already blown through $4.5 million.

Maybe this explains the dishonest reporting.

Much of the organization’s most effective work goes on behind the scenes, as it quietly feeds material to reporters all over the country.

Most of what they do seems to be hush-hush.

The group’s sister nonprofit arm, American Bridge 21st Century Foundation, which is not required to disclose its donors, raised an additional $2.7 million last year. The foundation then transferred nearly $223,000 of that untraceable money to the super PAC, a controversial move that has raised concerns among campaign finance reform advocates.

So some shady group run by such an oily figure as Brock is running ads using untraceable money, but it’s Mitt Romney who’s  not being transparent?
