Sunday we noted the weekend bloodbath in Chicago and today the numbers are even more gruesome. You know, if we actually had a functioning President and Attorney General they might consider sending in the National Guard to help maintain order.
Eight people died — including a 16-year-old boy — and at least 43 others were wounded in weekend shootings across the city, Chicago police reported.
Joseph Briggs was the youngest to die in the weekend gun violence, just outside his Marquette Park home.
The 16-year-old was shot on his front porch in the 6100 block of South Rockwell, police said. Shots were fired from a gray vehicle about 8 p.m. Saturday, police said, adding that the shooting might be gang-related.
Briggs was pronounced dead at 1:40 a.m. at Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn, according to the medical examiner’s office.
The teen’s grieving grandmother, who was raising him and his sisters, did not believe Briggs was the intended target. He was just in the wrong place at the wrong time, Josephine Briggs said.
She was appalled at the thought that he was struck down on the porch of his home.
The area has been like a shooting gallery of late — so much so, she had thought about relocating.
“There’s been a lot of shootings on this block,” Josephine Briggs said.“Once I bury him, I’m going to try and move,” she said.
The easygoing teen was a junior at Gage Park High School who enjoyed football and basketball.
“He [had] a nice personality. He always [was] smiling. Every time you see him he got a big smile on his face. He was just a happy grandson,” she said, lamenting that he’ll never realize his dream of going to college.
If people were actually concerned about saving lives they would consider voting Republican. It worked in New York City when Rudy Giuliani was elected. But just keep voting Democrat folks, and watch the body count rise.
Remember those websites that chronicled the Iraq body count? They should consider doing the same for Chicago. Sadly, around the same number were killed or wounded in a mortar attack in Baghdad Sunday.
You know what might drive the message home that Chicago is a lawless wasteland? Mitt Romney should go there and call for federal intervention in order to save lives, while pointing the finger at Rahm Emanuel, Barack Obama and David Axelrod.
