Strangely this doesn’t seem to rate as big news any more.
At least nine people were shot between 11:10 p.m. Saturday and 5 a.m. Sunday, according to Chicago police, including four outside a West Side club about 3 a.m.
Three men and a woman were shot outside The Supper Club on the 2700 block of West Madison Street in the East Garfield Park neighborhood. The four victims told police they they had left the crowded club and were walking eastbound on Madison when a man in his 20s who was refused entry earlier came back to the scene and opened fire, hitting the four before fleeing on foot, police said.
A 33-year-old woman was shot in the abdomen, a 17-year-old man was shot in the right thigh, an 18-year-old man was shot in the buttocks, and a 21-year-old man suffered a gunshot wound to the groin, police said.
The woman, a mother of three who is employed in the Chicago Tribune packaging department according to family, was at the club for a large birthday party with three other friends. One of those friends was driving away westbound on Madison when the shooting started.
“I got down in my car,” the woman said. “I heard the shells hitting my tires, I made a U-turn and she was on the ground.”
Whitfield was “conscious” at the scene, her friend said, and was taken to John H. Stroger, Jr. Hospital of Cook County by someone driving a pickup truck. She was in surgery from 4 a.m. until 9:30 a.m., her friend said. The victim’s aunt, Felice Dumas, said at the hospital this morning that “She’s doing great.”
The victim’s friend said that a lot of people were inside the club. Of the shooting, she said, “It’s shocking and I’m not surprised the incident happened. … It’s crazy nowadays.”
Indeed, it is. You know what might help? If black leaders denounced the criminals in their midst. Yeah, a crazy notion, I know.
