Another Obama Victory: Smithfield to Shut Virginia Plant

Posted by on Nov 15, 2012 at 12:56 pm

Anyone paying attention to all the jobs being cut in those swing states Obama won? Not only is unemployment surging and the market plummeting, major companies are announcing layoffs seemingly by the hour. But none of this has anything to do, of course, with Obama’s re-election. And now the folks in Virginia are also falling victim. I’d pity them but they cast their lot with an economic catastrophe, and now they shall suffer.

Smithfield Foods Inc. said Wednesday that it will begin its previously announced shutdown of a Virginia facility that makes hot dogs and deli meat.

The Smithfield, Va.-based company said layoffs will start at the Portsmouth plant in January and it will close at the end of March. The first layoffs at the Smithfield Packing Co. facility will involve about 120 workers, with more than 400 workers affected by the time plant is closed, said Jeff Gough, Smithfield’s senior vice president for human resources. Employees have been offered transfer opportunities.

In a bid to spread the misery evenly, an Illinois company also announced 567 jobs will be terminated, while another 1500 in swing-state Ohio will be gone. Connecticut-based Xerox also will be slashing 2500 jobs. Good times.

Obama’s union thugs, meanwhile, threaten the closing of Hostess plants. No more Twinkies for you!

Good for them. I hope more Obama voters lose their jobs, their homes, and their way of life! I do not feel sorry for them. You brought this on all of us. Now suffer the consequences!

I agree with you that swing states are being slammed but in the case of the ‘1500 jobs in Ohio’ note it is actually Columbus, Indiana, headquarters of Cummins Engine.

SO, after yesterday’s press conference, what does the President have to say about this? Oh yeh, we don’t know because our illustrious free press never asked him.

Elections have consequences. Maybe by the time the next one rolls around, voters will have had about enough “progressive” consequences and will choose with more care.

Ding dong, the Twinkie is dead.

50% or more of something is more than 100% of nothing. But math is hard, as Barbie said, and is something Obama admits to being bad at.

this will be blamed on George W Bush and the republicans by obama and the media.

the fools will eat it up and the Republic disintegrates

Everything bad that happens in the next four years is directly Obama’s fault. Nevermind that Smithfield said it is closing the plant because it cannot support the manufacturing technology changes and product development necessary to meet the company’s needs.

Also nevermind that Smithfield will bring a new $80 million state-of-the-art hot dog plant online in its fiscal fourth quarter next spring.

Obama sucks, and people who lose their jobs in Virginia deserve it! That’s going to be our winning message going into 2014.

To “ObamaDrama” — yes, the Smithfield company is opening a new plant — in another state (North Carolina). Not high tax Virginia. North Carolina — a state the went for Romney in 2012.

You reap what you sew…they elected Obama, now they get to pay for it. Ohio and Pennsylvania lost more than 10k jobs last week…and now it’s VA’s turn. More to come as we slide back into recession and new hires become fewer and fewer…

Watch for Obama to announce yet another “Newer Deal” to deal with the coming crisis…he’ll want another Trillion $ “Stimulus Package.” The MSM will begin the drumbeat over the next few weeks, as they also start demanding higher taxes…so the “rich can pay, just a little bit more.”

If the GOP was really smart, they’d

    1) Eliminate the Hollywood tax breaks,
    2) Pass a tax on the “gross wealth” and require a 10% levy on all those worth more than $1 million dollars (you’ll get to listen for ALL the wealthy Dem’s in Congress SCREAM) and see the true colours of Democrats across the nation.
    3) Pass a balanced budget, and send it to the Senate, and refuse to negotiate…until the Senate passes a budget at all (they haven’t in almost 4 years).

Unfortunately, the GOP leadeship in the House has “gone along to get along” for so long, they don’t know how to do anything other than to surrender to Democratic “negotiations” (you’d call them demands).

To CBDenver: And this plant closing that was announced in November 2011…and the opening of the NC plant…has what to do with Obama again?

  11. GBarto on 15/15/12 at 6:21 pm

Nothing to do with Obama per se, but everything to do with old facilities closing in less hospitable economic climes and new facilities opening in places that are less hostile to business. The voting just follows the overall attitudes of the two locations to jobs not rooted in government spending and regulation.

  12. Richard on 15/15/12 at 6:47 pm

Unfortunately, as usual it is not the ones who voted for O who suffer. demographically speaking, the people who work at the plant probably dod not vote for “The One”, but they lose their jobs.

  13. Esau's Message on 15/15/12 at 7:51 pm

Well, this is a disaster for Virginia. But I guaranty you those Smithfield workers did not vote for Obama. They just stayed home.

Of course, wishing harm bad on Southeastern Virginia is a good thing. While wishing harm on the South Jersey shore is a bad thing, right?

  14. Becca on 16/16/12 at 1:10 am

CBDenver- Um, you’re talking out of your ass….taxes and unemployment are both lower in Va than NC (by A LOT) because Va Gov/Senate/House are all GOP while NC has more dems and just now got rid of that leftist bev purdue!! btw all you assholes that say that Va deserves to lose jobs…..I live in Va Beach and this area did not vote for Obama….we’re stuck with noVa and all the damn federal workers!! and we’re gonna be losing more jobs because of defense so y’all need to check yourselves and shut your fucking mouths!!!

  15. Moneyrunner on 16/16/12 at 7:18 am

Becca may live in Virginia Beach, but the plant that is closing is in Portsmouth, quite a different place. Portsmouth went for Obama over Romney by nearly 3 to one. 32,501 to 12,858 to be exact. Anyone driving past the plant as workers leave can immediately tell if they are Obama voters.

Regarding the tax burden in VA relative to NC I would say that VA is better for the individual. But the biggest single expense by far for any company doing business is labor. My guess, and it’s only a guess, is that it costs less to run a factory in NC than in VA. So if you’re going to close one plant and open another, it makes sense to do it in a place where the cost of operating it is lower.

As a Virginia resident, I believe that this state will be very badly affected by the military cutbacks. Virginia Beach will probably be hard hit because of the Navy facilities there.

No more movies or nights out with the spouse. Sell all the toys,(sno-sled,four wheeler, boat). Purchase nothing that you can do without, other than guns or ammunition. Hunker down
and store food rations and water. The proverbial shit is going to hit the fan before Obumma has completed his work, and your sole responsibility is to your family, and the burgeoning
right wing army of similar thinking people. We have been at war with Islam for centuries, and we are now at war with a
large segment of our own citizens.

My big brother says that a gun dealer near him has a sign in the window saying that Obama voters are not welcome. “They are not smart enough to own a gun.”

I’m pretty certain my brother was serious, but I’d say that dealer is taking his life in his hands if he’s dissing Obama-bots! Sure, he’s got the guns, but they’ve got the numbers and the huge bulk! ACORN, SEIU, AFL-CIO, who knows what other alphabet-soup folks might come a-callin’?

  18. MassJim on 26/26/12 at 5:26 pm

Obama is closing a plant that processes pork products? Do we need any more proof that he is a Muslim?
