Slapfight: OWS Clowns Upset Over Jay-Z Cashing In On T-Shirts

Posted by on Nov 11, 2011 at 5:47 pm

Rapper Jay-Z is one of many celebutards who’ve gone down to Zuccotti Park to pretend he cares about the protesters and to get some facetime before the media. But always the businessman, he’s now cashing in on the increasingly deadly movement by pimping a line of t-shirts.

Naturally, he’s not into redistributing the wealth, much to the chagrin of the “occupy” mob.

Earlier this week, Jay-Z mugged for the cameras wearing an “Occupy All Streets” t-shirt, while standing next to mogul and Occupy Wall Street supporter Russell Simmons. The photo circulated, creating plenty of buzz, and lo and behold now the shirt is now for sale through Jay-Z’s clothing company Rocawear, where he plans to turn a profit from it. His reps at Rocawear have confirmed, “At this time we have not made an official commitment to monetarily support the movement.” Essentially, the rapper/entrepreneur, who is firmly planted amongst the 1%, has chosen to co-opt a slogan that’s founded in the movement, and use it for his own monetary gain. What do the protesters think of all this? We talked to a few of them today:

  • “Naturally there will be some bloodsuckers who come out of the woodwork. We have a screen-printers guild on camp, and it’s easy to find many other T-shirts that actually benefit the cause. In regards to the question, a much better way to show your support for #ows would be to show up and participate in this momentous occasion and help to shape a new and better future.” — Patrick Bruner, a spokesman for OWS
  • “Awful, I don’t think he should take the idea of this movement and profit. He may eventually donate some of the profits, though. If not he’s a shit head.” — Dane, from NYC
  • “Not right, it’s a weird thing he supported it and now he’s doing that. Something is not right about that.” — Angela, student from Rhode Island

The irony is Jay-Z is doing the American capitalist thing, taking an idea, making an investment and turning a profit, the exact thing these bozos are protesting. They whine and moan about life being so unfair, but what have they done to make a buck the past two months? Nothing. Life is passing them by while they sit around shouting and marinating in their own ignorance and stupidity.

The irony is, um, rich, no?

I can see many an entrepreneur now getting in on the act: “I went down to the OWS and all I got was this lousy t-shirt.” I suspect many an immigrant from Nigeria, Pakistan and elsewhere all thinking “hmm, I can make me some money!”

Why, maybe the streets are paved with gold after all.

Good to see the millionaire rapper Jay Z is “down with the struggle” as he pimps his new clothing line. I wonder if those tee shirts will be made in Chinese sweatshops using child labor. Not that there’s anything wrong with that, since the Chinese are good hearted Communists, not “evil” capitalists.
