A police officer and a second person at Virginia Tech were fatally shot Thursday, the campus’ Collegiate Times newspaper reported.

A second victim was found in a large campus parking lot nearby, the school confirmed in a statement.

The Collegiate Times reported on its Twitter page that students are heard gunshots near Torgersen Hall and that police were emptying the Performance Arts Building.

Students were warned to stay indoors and secure in place while the suspect remained at large.

The initial shots were reportedly fired in the parking lot of Cassell Coliseum.

Unconfirmed reports indicated the shooting occurred during a traffic stop.

The suspect was described as a white male wearing gray sweatpants, a gray hat with a neon green brim, a maroon hooded sweatshirt and a backpack, the school said on its website.

He was reportedly traveling on foot toward McComas Hall, a campus gym.
