On Saturday there will be a football game. Not for national titles nor a BCS bowl but one that somehow manages to epitomize the word rivalry while at the same time transcending that word. It is a game with a 120 year history. For many of the participants it will be the last football game they play at this level or the next, for the seniors they will embark upon a career in the either Army, Navy, or Marines. For millions of current and past veterans this is the culmination of all that is symbolized by the phrase “inter service rivalry”, but like the young man says at the end of the video, on this one day we hate each others guts, but tomorrow we would put our lives in their hands.
The Navy is currently on a 9 game win streak against the Army. I had so hoped that when Georgia Tech lured the Navy coach Paul Johnson away that that streak would end, but alas it was not to be. I am hoping that this is the year the streak ends.
The 2 hour special previewed in that video won’t air until December 21st on Showtime at which time the winner will have already been decided and left me just a little bit curious why they would wait so long to air it.
