If you were to land here from another planet and read this story, you’d have no idea this convicted criminal is the guy who helped the president buy his house in a shady land deal. Heck, the name “Obama” isn’t even mentioned. How convenient.
A man who helped federal prosecutors learn about Illinois’ ‘pay to play’ politics will be sentenced Tuesday.
Tony Rezko, a former political fundraiser, was convicted in 2008 on corruption charges, including fraud, money laundering and trying to squeeze money out of firms wanting to do business with the state.
He has been in jail since his conviction, and his lawyers argue that has been long enough.
Rezko agreed to cooperate with prosecutors investigating corruption cases, including the one against former Gov. Rod Blagojevich. Because of that, Rezko’s own sentencing was delayed.
However, prosecutors never used Rezko’s testimony. His attorney says the former political fundraiser endured harsh conditions while he was waiting in jail and that if he would have been sentenced earlier, he would have been in a more so-called white collar criminal facility. They are asking for time served.
Obama has ties with the crook dating back to 1990, and he doesn’t even merit a mention in the story.
